Etienne Livingstone de Mestre was an Australian racehorse trainer with 5 Melbourne Cup wins (a record that stood for 99 years). His horse Archer was the winner of the first two Melbourne Cup races. He lived at the Terara estate.
Etienne Livingstone de Mestre was born in Sydney, New South Wales, on 9 April 1832. He was the son of Prosper de Mestre and Mary Ann Black.
In about 1850 he had a daughter, Helen "Ellen" de Mestre, with Aboriginal woman Sarah Lamb.
He married Clara E Rowe in 1873 at Paddington, New South Wales.[1] They had eleven children together.
He died at "Garryowen" Moss Vale, NSW, on the 22nd of October, 1916, and was buried in the Bong Bong Church of England cemetery.
Etienne De Mestre was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame in 1992.
